10,343,039 – Eaton / Golf Pride – Lightweight Multicolor Compression Molded Grip

Patent No.: 10,343,039 (get PDF)

Invention Title: Lightweight Multicolor Compression Molded Grip

Assignee: Eaton Intelligent Power, Ltd.

Abstract: A lightweight compression molded multicolor golf grip having at least a first section and a second section of differing colors and composed of elastomer compounds having a density of less than 0.90 g/cc, and joined by cross-linking across a sharply defined cross-color interface having an interface transition zone beyond which there is no mixing of the colors. The grip has a soft feel and unique compression characteristics achieved in some embodiments through the controlled use of an expanding blowing agent in a rubber compound including an EPDM mixture. Achieving the sharply defined cross-color interface is due in part to the use of complementary geometries at opposing interface edges to increase the stability of the interface and reduce the flow during molding associated with the increased viscosity of low density rubber compounds, promote cross-linking of the sections, and better distribute and control the consolidation pressure.

About Us: How do you build a defensive patent portfolio? Once you have invested in a patent application there is tremendous value in keeping it open by filing continuation applications, particularly when the parent application contains lots of good, and potentially “mine-able,” disclosure. This is why viewing patent application preparation as a commodity service is a short sighted, and costly, mistake. Paying 20-40% more for a patent application containing tons of disclosure and alternatively embodiments is an investment that often provides huge long-term returns. I encourage clients to begin process by shooting to have an application with enough disclosure that it may be used 10 years down the road to try to cover new competitor’s products. Often an independent review of your patent portfolio can pay off in spades and create a shield that makes your competitors think twice about asserting their patents against you.
